"Kolkata to get Water Metro connectivity," says Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari
Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has announced Rathindra Nath Bose as the nominee for the Speaker of the 18th West Bengal Legislative Assembly. Bose, the MLA from Cooch Behar South, was selected over veteran leaders like Tapas Roy, Swapan Dasgupta, and Sajal Ghosh. The announcement, made on Thursday via social media, reflects the new government's focus on empowering leadership from North Bengal and rewarding long-term organizational loyalty.
Rathindra Nath Bose is a first-time MLA with no prior experience in parliamentary politics, but he brings a decades-long association with the RSS and the BJP. Currently serving as the state vice-president and the convener of the BJP’s North Bengal division, Bose is recognized as a formidable orator and a master strategist. His selection is historic, as it marks the first time an MLA from North Bengal has been chosen to preside over the state assembly, signaling a shift in the regional power balance.
The Chief Minister expressed his firm belief that Bose would be elected unanimously. According to legislative rules, the Speaker is elected after the MLAs take their oaths. If the opposition parties—the TMC and the Left—decide not to field a candidate against him, Bose will assume the prestigious chair without a contest. While some quarters were surprised by the choice of a parliamentary novice, party insiders suggest that his deep ties to the Sangh Parivar and his clean organizational record were the deciding factors.
